“It was from the art teacher Alberto da Veiga Guignard from 1944 that Amilcar de Castro learned his drawing techniques, specially the one that applies a rough pencil on paper, which he used later for his researches on painting, until he finally gets to sculptures. In his sculptures Amilcar used cutting and folding techniques on different materials like steel, also applying those painting teachings from Guignard, his drawing teacher until 1950.
Observing Amilcar de Castro works in different supports we can notice the importance he always gave to different raw material. One can also say the artist comes from a native region of Brazil where vegetal and mineral are important part of inhabitants history and daily life. Organic material always belonged to his life and had an important role on his entire artistic development and carrier. ” (extract from the text from curator Ricardo Fernandes)
